ARTIST BIO

Enjoy a more dynamic game of chess with this set featuring iconographic pieces adapted from some of MoMA collection artist Keith Haring’s most beloved works. Setting cool blue and green against warm red and orange on the other, the Keith Haring Colorful Chess Set features pawns made of Haring’s radiant babies and larger pieces made from stacks of two animated human figures interacting, all offset by the artist’s signature black outlines.

Crafted of turned and lacquered wood by the beloved French toy firm Vilac, the set includes a white fabric bag to hold the pieces when not in use that features the artist’s 1989 self-portrait. The Keith Haring Colorful Chess Set board folds in half for storage, fitting all the pieces inside and closes with a latch to keep everything secure.

Open board measures 0.8h x 16.15w x 16.15"d and pieces range from 0.5” (pawn) to 2.5” (king) tall. Keith Haring’s work is represented in MoMA’s collection and designs by Vilac were featured in the 2012 MoMA exhibition Century of the Child: Growing by Design, 1900–2000.
