ABOUT THE ART

‘Fresh Start is based on a mural originally painted in Italy in 2019 for the Toward 2030 campaign. A year ago, the work was a call for all of us to build a greener future, and also perhaps to acknowledge that it is the youngest generation who are currently on the front lines of that fight. The old leaders, the old symbols, and the old way of doing things have failed to stem the literal rising tides of climate change.

This summer, we saw statues fall across the world, statues that celebrated people who believed that they had a right to own other people. In Bristol, we saw Black people stand up on a plinth that had for generations been dedicated to a man who believed that Black people were less than human. In Richmond, we saw a sculpture transformed from a symbol of hate into a site of joy, through its supposed defacement.’

In less than a year the meaning of this image had expanded the way we could have not imagined.

To acknowledge these inter-related struggles and the beautiful, powerful moments that we have seen this summer in solid support of Black Lives Matter and ending racism. We teamed up with The Heliotrope Foundation to release this hand finished edition of 10 VAPs (Variant Artist Proofs), with all proceeds going to support the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People).
