ABOUT THE ART
Andy Warhol's (1928-1987) self-portraits evolved from early photo booth strips to late, ghostly "fright wig" images, consistently exploring his identity and public persona through repetition and disguise.
His first self-portraits in 1963-64 used silkscreen prints based on photo booth photographs to create mass-produced imagery, a method he had previously used for commissioned works. He continued to use self-portraiture throughout his life, often manipulating his appearance with wigs, makeup, and varying styles, to explore fame, disguise, and his own image as a celebrity icon.
