ABOUT THE ART

"Show your friends and colleagues your admiration for Britain’s greatest ever living monarch with this deluxe lesbian water-sports fetish tableau."

- Banksy

'Queen Vic' depicts the English monarch engaged in what seems to be an indecorous sexual act. Indeed, she is sitting on the face of another woman, a direct shot at Queen Victoriaanti-gay beliefs. Both characters are realized in Banksy’s black and white stencil style against a regal red background. Queen Victoria is presented in full regalia with her crown and scepter, and the unexpected addition of suspenders, knee-high leather boots and a short skirt that exposes her upper thigh. Her partner is also wearing suspenders and high heels, her arms thrown back in submission. Queen Victoria, England’s monarch from 1837 until her death in 1901, allegedly stated publicly during her rein that “women cannot be gay,” and passed anti-gay laws to support this belief.

Banksy is well known for his criticism of the UK’s monarchy, power, and government, a recurring theme found in the artist’s body of work. In 'Monkey Queen', Banksy depicts Queen Elizabeth II as a chimpanzee, and in 'Turf War', Winston Churchill is seen sporting a bright green mohawk made to look like grass – the artist’s way of criticizing the constant battles for borders and territory Churchill inserted himself into in the name of colonialism.

ABOUT THE EVENT

THE ART OF BANKSY HOLDS THE WORLD’S LARGEST COLLECTION OF PRIVATELY OWNED BANKSY ART.

This globally acclaimed showcase features original and authenticated works associated with, arguably, the most intriguing and talked-about artist in modern history. On display are prints, canvasses, screen prints, sculptures, unique works and limited-edition pieces mainly dated between the years 1997 to 2008, the period which resulted in Banksy’s most recognizable and well-known works.

The exhibit features iconic works such as ‘Girl and Balloon’, ‘Flower Thrower’ and ‘Rude Copper’ alongside some of Banksy’s lesser known masterpieces. Banksy is most infamous for his outdoor art which can be found in streets all around the world. Banksy’s indoor pieces – original and unique works on canvas, wood and paper – have been less exposed and are also on display at this exhibition.

Banksy, whose identity remains a mystery is considered one of the world’s top political artists. In 2010, Time magazine selected the British artist for its list of the worlds’ 100 most influential people among the company of Barack Obama, Steve Jobs and Lady Gaga.

Over the years, Banksy has carried out a considerable number of ‘pranks’. One of the biggest stories in the art world recently was Banksy having his 'Girl with Balloon' painting go through the shredder just moments after the work was sold for nearly $1.4 million at auction.
