ARTIST BIO

Vhils (born Alexandre Farto, 1987, Portugal) is an internationally acclaimed contemporary artist known for his groundbreaking approach to urban art and portraiture. Emerging from the graffiti scene in the early 2000s, Vhils developed a distinctive visual language centered on subtractive creation—carving, drilling, and etching into surfaces such as walls, wood, metal, and paper to reveal layered portraits that explore identity, memory, and the impact of urban development.

Rather than adding material, Vhils removes it—transforming destruction into creation. This process has become his signature, producing striking, textural works that reflect the erosion and reconstruction of both cities and human experience.

Vhils rose to international prominence in 2008 after his participation in the Cans Festival in London alongside Banksy, and has since exhibited globally in major institutions and public spaces. His work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions across Europe, Asia, and the Americas, and is included in prominent public and private collections.

Working across multiple mediums—including large-scale public murals, gallery works, sculpture, video, and print editions—Vhils continues to push the boundaries between street art and contemporary fine art. His practice often engages with local communities, embedding personal and cultural narratives into each piece.

Today, Vhils is widely regarded as one of the most innovative voices in contemporary urban art, with a body of work that bridges raw materiality and deeply human storytelling.
