ABOUT THE ART
In 'Compose Yourself' (2022), Hijack delivers a layered and visually dynamic work that blends street art aesthetics with music, identity, and self-expression. Set against a textured, collage-like urban backdrop filled with posters, graffiti, and cultural references, the composition features a young figure wearing an “I ♥ NY” sweatshirt, headphones resting around his neck, as an older figure—suggestive of a mentor or conductor—physically “plugs” into him, guiding the music. The red heart becomes both a literal and symbolic connection point, transforming the act of listening into something deeper: a metaphor for influence, creativity, and the shaping of one’s inner voice.
The piece captures Hijack’s signature juxtaposition of innocence and control, individuality and external influence. The title, 'Compose Yourself', operates as a clever double entendre—referencing both musical composition and the act of self-definition. Through this interaction, Hijack explores how identity is formed through culture, mentorship, and lived experience, particularly within the context of urban life and creative expression.
As the son of renowned street artist Mr. Brainwash (Thierry Guetta), Hijack’s work naturally invites comparison, and 'Compose Yourself' reflects that lineage while carving out its own distinct voice.
Like his father, Hijack incorporates bold stenciling, pop culture references, and layered textures reminiscent of street posters and city walls. However, his recurring hooded or anonymous figures and more introspective narratives push the work into a more contemporary, psychologically driven space. With this piece, Hijack continues to evolve beyond influence, establishing himself as a compelling voice in the next generation of urban and pop art.
