ABOUT THE CATALOG
Memorie Urbane was born in 2011 from an idea by Davide Rossillo , president of Turismo Creativo, who has always supported contemporary art as an element of cultural dynamism and a strategy for socio-economic, cultural and tourist growth. The aim of the project is to bring “out into the open” contemporary artistic practice and in particular urban art, as a frontier art, placing it in close contact with the territory in order to stimulate a process of interaction and mutual contamination.
The Festival moves in continuity with the historical, artistic and natural heritage of the territory and underlines it also in the name that has been chosen: Memorie Urbane, recalls how “memory” is considered fundamental as a starting point, even in an innovative process projected towards the future. The aim is to rediscover the city through contemporary urban art that becomes a tool to give new prominence to spaces that, despite being part of an acquired visual horizon, are usually neglected, abandoned and without a qualification. “Memorie Urbane” is a dialogue between present and past, between art and public spaces .
A formula that has now been tested, which has led the Festival to evolve and become in 11 editions the largest museum of contemporary mural art in Italy with more than 280 interventions carried out in 17 towns and with more than 110 artists from all over the world . Creating an open-air artistic laboratory, worthy of the main European capitals. A world of works, a network of artists and a universe of colors that people experience directly on the walls of their city and help to create, taking enthusiastic care of the artists and the work that they give to the territory, in places previously forgotten.
Memorie Urbane proposes a new way of experiencing your city and of tourism. Our determination will bring the cities involved into the heart of cultural production of international quality to make them increasingly become a destination for enthusiasts of the most fun, explosive and democratic form of contemporary art, loved by people of all ages. All this thanks to the administrations that have joined the project and to all the territorial associations that volunteer to want to improve the cities in which they live and believe.
2022 sees us celebrate the 11th edition , and blow out the eighth candle of our gallery Street Art Place, and the first of Davide Rossillo Contemporary, the new exhibition space in Formia, is also an artistic/creative laboratory. For this edition, in addition to the creation of wall interventions, we have created an artistic residence project, in the stone village of Maranola, inside an old oil mill in the historic center, 5 artists will meet and work on the production of works for the creation of a collective exhibition inside the oil mill. A way to bring together and make artists talk to each other and with the territory again, after two years of pandemic.
