ABOUT THE ART
Blowing into cartridges is a lost art.
I rediscovered my old Game Boy in a drawer at my mum's house recently. It was still in the off brand faux-leather carry case I had decorated with one simple, wonky star using cheap glow-in-the-dark glue.
The first game I put in (Super Mario Land 2, if you're curious) booted up as a garbled mess and, for a split second, I thought time had taken it's toll. But then muscle memory kicked in and, after giving the game a few artful blows, it worked.
As an alleged adult, I've bought games that I haven't even started yet. But as a kid, getting a new game was so rare, I played each one to death. Decades later, I still know where too many of the treasures in Wario Land are hidden. Or where the very first patch of grass I can find a Drowzee in Pokemon Silver is, which I'll give a totally-excellent-and-not-remotely-childish name.
Of course I like the things I liked when I was younger because, well, it makes me feel young again. Less problems, less worries, what's not to like? But finding my Game Boy has reminded me that there's no reason I can't keep things simple right now. Keep the things I love.
Now excuse me whilst I find a lamp to go play under...
