ABOUT THE ART

New works on paper, commissioned frfom the artist for PULSE New York, 2014

RETNA has a broad interest in the pictorial language of ancient cultures. The hieroglyphics and calligraphy that he has long studied developed into an improvised language that is at once familiar and unknowable.  RETNA deconstructs the readymade nature of alphabets by stepping them of their communicative function and empowers his mark making with the sentiment of Modernist abstraction.

RETNA explains, "I want my text to feel universal. I want people from different cultures to all find some similarity in it --whether they can read it or not."

RETNA, born Marquis Lewis, 1979, is a Los Angeles-based artist.  He has been an important contributor to the street art scene since the early 1990s and received international acclaim from his contribution to "Art in the Streets," the first major museum of graffiti and street art at MOCA LA.
